If you fall in love with Colombia (and many do), you might want to extend your stay beyond a
quick vacation. Here’s how to navigate visas, extensions, and long-term residency options.
1. Tourist Visa Basics
- U.S. passport holders: 90 days visa-free upon arrival.
- Extension: Apply at Migración Colombia for an additional 90 days.
- Maximum stay: 180 days per calendar year on a tourist visa.
2. Extending Your Stay
- Apply online or at a Migración Colombia office before your visa expires.
- Fee: Around $30–$50 USD.
- You’ll need: Passport, proof of funds, return ticket (sometimes), and an application form.
3. Long-Term Visa Options
- Digital Nomad Visa
- For remote workers and freelancers.
- Stay up to 2 years.
- Proof of income: ~$700 USD/month.
- Marriage/Partner Visa (M-Type)
- Requires legal marriage or civil union with a Colombian citizen
- Renewable annually, eligible for residency after 3 years.
- Investor Visa
- Requires significant investment (~$27,000 USD in real estate or business).
- Valid for 1–3 years.
- Retirement Visa
- Proof of monthly pension (~$750 USD).
- Ideal for older Passport Bros wanting a long-term base.
4. Residency & Citizenship
- Permanent Residency: Possible after 5 years on certain visas (or 2 years if married to a Colombian).
- Citizenship: After 5 years of residency (or 2 years if married).
- Passport Bro Tip:
Many guys use a 180 days in Colombia / 180 days in another country rotation to keep things fresh and legal while maintaining dating and business connections in Colombia.
