Colombia is unique, it doesn’t have four seasons like North America or Europe. Instead, the climate changes based on altitude and region, not time of year. That means your travel experience will vary greatly depending on where you go. Here’s how to plan your trip around Colombia’s weather.
1. Understanding Colombia’s Climate Zones
- Caribbean Coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta): Hot and humid year-round (75–90°F / 24–32°C).
- Andean Cities (Medellín, Bogotá): Mild, spring-like weather in Medellín (65–85°F), cooler in Bogotá (50–70°F).
- Amazon & Pacific Coast: Tropical and humid with heavy rainfall.
2. Dry Season vs. Rainy Season
- Dry Season: December–March, July–August
- Best for beaches, hiking, festivals, and outdoor activities.
- Rainy Season: April–June, September–November
- Rain usually falls in short bursts, mornings and nights can still be clear.
- Fewer tourists, cheaper accommodation.
3. Best Months by Destination
- Cartagena & Caribbean Coast: December–April (less rain, calm seas)
- Medellín: Year-round, but July–August is great for Feria de las Flores festival.
- Bogotá: December–March for sunnier skies.
- Cali: December for Feria de Cali (salsa festival).
4. Events to Plan Around
- Barranquilla Carnival – February/March
- Feria de Cali – Late December
- Independence Day – July 20
- Passport Bro Tip:
If you want nightlife and dating opportunities, dry season draws more locals and tourists to social spots but if you want deeper, less “touristy” connections, go in the rainy season when things are calmer.
